Calibre is used to read and manage electronic books and was first developed in 2006 under the name libprs500. Calibre is available as a free download and works with many versions of the Windows, Linux and Apple Mac Operating Systems. Calibre uses a GNU General Public License and is available is 37 different languages.
The Calibre program supports a large number of file formats including EPUB and the ones used by the Amazon kindle service. Calibre allows for any avid reader to transfer all of their ebooks onto one, ultimate electronic reader. Calibre has a number of features, including the ability to edit any books that have been downloaded onto the Calibre device. Calibre can also use Digital Rights Management, also known as DRM, which is used as an anti-sharing and anti-pirating device and is common with most ebook formats.
Calibre also offers a number of features to help users manage and organize their ebook collection. Calibre utilizes metadata, allowing for quicker and easier searches through the ebook libraries. There are a number of plug-ins and add ons available for the Calibre software.
